Back when I was in high school, which is too embarrassingly long ago to put down, stoner and doom music was more than just music, it was a way of life for certain male friends of mine. Yes, from my experience, this was a type of lifestyle that was popular more with the boys I knew than the girls (I’m a girl. Well, a woman now) As a girl, I was more of the hanger on type. Boys who were into stoner and doom music were brooding artistic types, the types of guys I was totally attracted to, and they were cool.
As a girl who hung out with these guys, I got to listen to my share of stoner and doom music. I grew up listening to bands from Metallica, to Canibal Corpse, Iron Maiden, and various other bands who’s names are unprintable for a family blog. This music was an outlet for teen angst, and we were all full of plenty of that at the time. You hate your parents? Well then pop in some death metal and rage against the rules they impose. This type of music was a way for us to seperate ourselves from our parents, and to scare them at the same time at an age when scaring your parents is fun.
I’m way older now, and so are my old headbanging friends, but this was the music of our youth and it’s never to be forgotten. Why, just last year a 36 year old ex stoner friend of mine atteneded an Iron Maiden show and he rocked out like he was 16 again. My tastes have changed over the years, but there will forever be a special place in my heart for Stoner and Doom music, just like I’m sure the kids today are just now discovering.Keep looking, there’s more: Iron Maiden’s Music Given the Lullaby Treatment on New Album
