Metallica has been an extremely important band over the last 30 years. They know controversy better than any band out there, which is why so many fans are adamant about their love for the band’s music. There are also plenty of people out there who absolutely hate anything Metallica releases. The same goes for legendary musician Lou Reed. He was an original member of The Velvet Underground and has released many albums of his own over the years. While many fans of traditional music often call Reed’s talents as a vocalist into question, there is no denying that he has still made a huge difference in the music world.Didn’t catch that? This explains it.

It seems as though both Metallica and Lou Reed have decided to collaborate on an album. The album will be called “Lulu” and is based on a set of plays from the 1800s about a young actress who gets caught up in drugs and prostitution, finally meeting her end at the hands of Jack the Ripper. While many fans are scratching their heads over this collaboration, it will certainly continue the streak of controversy that both Metallica and Lou Reed are famous for. If one thing is for certain, it’s that the album will likely sell well.

Whether you are a big fan or not, going to see Metallica in concert is an event. While the days of playing in small, hot clubs are decades behind them, Metallica is still able to pull off an intimate feeling, even if you are seeing them with a crowd of 60,000 in a massive stadium. So what can you expect at a Metallica show? You can expect a two hour-plus show filled with a massive stage, thousands of banging heads, fire, and a whole lot of your favorite songs, whether you like new Metallica or old Metallica (or a little bit of both).

When it comes to Metallica 2011, the band continues its history of hitting the stage to Ennio Morricone songs (a famous Italian composer who is known for scoring Spaghetti Western films) before launching into “Hit the Lights” from their album “Kill ‘Em All.” With 25 years of music under their belt, Metallica has enough songs for a week’s worth of concerts, though their set’s tend to focus mostly on their most beloved songs such as “Master of Puppets”, “Seek and Destroy”, “Ride the Lightning,” “Enter Sandman” and “Fade to Black,” before ending their set with the classic “Creeping Death.”

Back when I was in high school, which is too embarrassingly long ago to put down, stoner and doom music was more than just music, it was a way of life for certain male friends of mine. Yes, from my experience, this was a type of lifestyle that was popular more with the boys I knew than the girls (I’m a girl. Well, a woman now) As a girl, I was more of the hanger on type. Boys who were into stoner and doom music were brooding artistic types, the types of guys I was totally attracted to, and they were cool.

As a girl who hung out with these guys, I got to listen to my share of stoner and doom music. I grew up listening to bands from Metallica, to Canibal Corpse, Iron Maiden, and various other bands who’s names are unprintable for a family blog. This music was an outlet for teen angst, and we were all full of plenty of that at the time. You hate your parents? Well then pop in some death metal and rage against the rules they impose. This type of music was a way for us to seperate ourselves from our parents, and to scare them at the same time at an age when scaring your parents is fun.

I’m way older now, and so are my old headbanging friends, but this was the music of our youth and it’s never to be forgotten. Why, just last year a 36 year old ex stoner friend of mine atteneded an Iron Maiden show and he rocked out like he was 16 again. My tastes have changed over the years, but there will forever be a special place in my heart for Stoner and Doom music, just like I’m sure the kids today are just now discovering.Keep looking, there’s more: Iron Maiden’s Music Given the Lullaby Treatment on New Album

The Stockholm based band Opeth is currently embarking on an international tour in order to promote their new album “Heritage” to the world wide community. The Swedish band provides a unique blend of metal rock with emotional instrumental interludes that make for a sound that is familiar yet unique. The first track on the new “Heritage” album is a keyboard heavy instrumental piece that seems to provide a calming introduction which is to be followed by the electric guitar infused songs later in the album. Front man Lars Mikael kerfeldt’s voice provides a melodically haunting quality with just a touch of a rough edge. When you think you know what is coming next on the “Heritage” album the band seems to throw a song in to keep you guessing about is coming next. This lines up with the band’s explanation of their attempt to create whole albums that provide an over-arching experience rather than a cut and pasted list of individual songs. The band states that they never plan to have a “hit single”, but rather will continue to make music with an entire album in mind. The tour is currently moving through North America, dates and locations at: http://www.opeth.com/home/tour-dates
