Type O Negative: Musical Geniuses In Metal

The musical genius of Type O Negative lives on in the hearts of metal fans worldwide. After the death of its legendary lead singer/songwriter Peter Steele in 2010, the band dissipated. Steele had an undeniable presence and his influence on metal was unmistakable. His honest and powerful lyrics helped lead Type O Negative to platinum success. Their musical genius is still revered by adoring fans today.

Type O Negative’s thrashing metal sound was born in Brooklyn, New York. The group of longtime friends started their long musical venture in 1976, forming the band Northern Lights. Three years later they changed the name to Fallout and started to adopt their famous Goth metal sound. After acquiring a little success, the band split apart for most of the 80′s. The band found a way to re-unite, this time calling themselves Sub-Zero. However, they soon realized the name wasn’t available. Thanks to Sub-Zero the infamous band mates already had 0- tattoos, so naturally the metal gods chose Type O Negative for the new band name.

They recorded their first album together as Type O Negative in 1991. It was mildly successful, but fans didn’t yet get Steele’s parotic lyrics. They really rose to metal stardom in 1993, with the release of their second studio album “Bloody Kisses”. It was immediately recognized as metal genius and garnered huge critical acclaim. But the effect it had on fans worldwide was far more enduring. The band went on to record five more albums and remained a metal cult favorite for the next 20 years.

Type O Negative has had a tremendous effect on the metal industry. Their insightful lyrics were both poetic and alarming. Their metal riffs and punk thrashing style intertwined to create a powerfully genius sound. They remain a metal icon and a fan favorite to this day.
